Kota Kinabalu: Several hours of downpour early Wednesday caused many motorists to lose control of their vehicles and at least two people were injured in separate mishaps statewide.
In the first, a 31-year-old man on the way to work at the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park lost control of his car because of the slippery road and crashed into a tree on the road divider.
The man had just dropped his wife at Sadong Jaya and was enroute to work at the Tanjung Lipat stretch when the accident occurred near the KPD market at about 8am. He suffered head injuries and was taken to hospital in an ambulance.
Minutes later near Tanjung Aru, an 18-year-old girl sustained chest injuries after the Austin Mini Cooper she was travelling in with a friend veered off the road and landed on the seaside stretch.
The 23-year-old friend, who was behind the wheel, lost control of the car and it scraped into another car before ending up on its side, just inches from the seabank.
In another mishap, a man lost control of his four-wheel drive vehicle and rammed into a tree, causing one its big branches to fall at Jalan Tuaran, near Sunny Garden here.
The man was sending his children to a school nearby when the incident occurred at 7am. No one was injured.
Strong winds also ripped branches from trees and caused an early morning crawl like at Likas. Fire and rescue personnel and City Hall staff later came to remove the debris.
In BEAUFORT, a man in his 30s cheated death after his Proton Iswara Aeroback overturned at 7am near Kampung Lumadan, Jalan Beaufort-Sipitang, Wednesday.
He was heading to Sipitang from Beaufort when he lost control of his vehicle during heavy rain and skidded towards a nearby drain, resulting in it ramming into a concrete pole and overturning while damaging its front part.
The man was sent to the Beaufort District Hospital for treatment.
In another incident, a mother who was travelling with her two children escaped unhurt after she lost control of her Proton Saga at 6 am near Mile 3, Padas Valley, Jalan Beaufort-Sipitang.
The woman in her 30s said she was on her way to send her children to school at SRJK Kung Ming when she lost control of her vehicle during the heavy rain and strong wind, resulting in it plunging into a nearby drain.
In TUARAN, non-stop rain for 10 hours saw the old Tamparuli bridge being submerged two feet around 12pm on Wednesday.
It was reported that tens of vehicles were stranded at the Old Tuaran Road after knee-deep water submerged the road in Rugading, Telipok Ria and Sepanggar in the morning of Wednesday.
Kiulu People Development Leader, Sami Bangud said many vehicles including his were trapped in the flash flood. However, so far there is no report of landslide or flooding in Kiulu.
Kampung Penimbawan JKKK, Jaukal Badar when contacted advised the villagers to be on the alert. The seaside village is exposed to strong winds and waves.
